My husband and I had an extremely disappointing experience with this clinic during one of the hardest times of our lives. My husband was hospitalized for six days and received a new diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. We were able to get in quickly with Dr. Capener, who was very kind, and I appreciate that. Unfortunately, everything beyond that was unacceptable. The follow-up was poor, and the office staff were incredibly difficult to work with. We called every single day regarding a critical medication. We later found out that the prior authorization had been submitted incorrectly six times—six. This caused significant delays in treatment during a very vulnerable time for my husband. We were repeatedly given timelines that never came to fruition. When I called, understandably frustrated and trying to advocate for my husband, I was told I was being disrespectful and “not nice,” rather than anyone taking accountability or fixing the issue. Because the prior authorization continued to be submitted incorrectly, we were told we would owe $2,800 out of pocket for a specialized medication. When it was finally submitted correctly, our insurance approved it for $30. That difference is staggering. The only bright spot in this experience was the Intermountain pharmacy staff, who showed more care, urgency, and professionalism than this office ever did. They worked directly with our insurance and helped resolve what this clinic could not. This period was mentally, physically, and financially exhausting for our family. Patients navigating a new, serious diagnosis deserve compassion, competence, and follow-through. Unfortunately, we received none of that here and ultimately switched providers. If you work in healthcare, patient care should come first. Sadly, that was not the case with this office.

Dr Capener was so great. He listened to me and my concerns and responded compassionately.

The Dr. was a man of few words but got right to the point. No extra frilly stuff, I like that. The nurse was amazing! Bethany if I recall correctly. She made me feel very calm and comfortable! It was my first time...

I was seen by a PA who works with Dr. Capner at Intermountain Health. They referred me to the GI clinic at the Riverton hospital. I went to Dr. Capner for three endoscopies to identify what my GI issues were. For the first Endoscopy, Dr. Capner came to see me about five minutes after the operation. He gave me a diagnosis of an autoimmune condition because of what he found while doing my scope. He also told me that I had small ulcers growing in my stomach. He said his nurse would follow up with me in a couple of days when my labs came back. When the nurse called back, she reviewed my lab results and confirmed the condition he had diagnosed me with. But, she didn’t mention anything about the ulcers. I asked her about them, and she said there were no notes about ulcers. I asked her to double-check with Dr. Capner because he had told me about them five minutes after seeing my stomach in the scope. She said she would talk to the doctor. She called back later and said she had asked him, and he told her that there were no ulcers. I was so confused and concerned. How could he have told me I had ulcers five minutes after the operation and then a few days later say that I don’t have them? It started to make me question things. Over the course of subsequent endoscopies, the clinic was consistently behind schedule. I once waited in my hospital gown for almost an hour and a half after my original operation time. Another time, the hospital staff had to grab Dr. Capner before he left for the day because he had forgotten to follow up with me after the operation. The whole experience of being Dr. Capner’s patient felt like an endoscopy factory with no attention to bedside manner or time to pause and review what the results meant for my overall health. It always felt like he was in a rush to get to the next thing. Also, twice, I was assigned a nurse who talked to me the whole time about her political opinions in an authoritative way. It made me feel very uncomfortable. The nicest people there were my first nurse and the MA who got me an extra blanket one of the times I had to wait forever for my operation. Also, after each endoscopy, Dr. Capner’s nurse would call me with my results and tell me that Dr. Capner recommended a medication to start taking immediately to help with my symptoms. I would have to remind the nurse every time that I was on an elimination diet and I couldn’t take the meds until we were done with all the testing periods. If I had followed the instructions the nurse gave me that came from Dr. Capner, my results for each scope would have been ruined. This means that either Dr. Capner and his staff didn’t update my medical chart, or they didn’t read my medical chart before recommending treatment plans to me. That also concerned me. How can they be recommending treatments without reviewing my medical chart? I know this is a novel. But as someone who has had GI issues their whole life, working with Dr. Capner and his team was really difficult. Through my own research with a new GI, I found solutions to my health condition much more quickly. I would not recommend him or his staff.

Terrible communication needs work. Was never given a time for my colonoscopy before now and it’s scheduled for the Monday after Christmas. They’re supposed to call me Wednesday the 24th but did not. No, nothing is open until the procedure day. I was told that they will contact me the day before the procedure to let me know the appointment time and that would be Sunday, the day of my suppose prep? Nothing has been open since the 24th. Now it’s December 26 and my colon colonoscopy is scheduled for Monday. I tried the answering service. I also tried to leave a message on office number But their system is not set up to be able to leave a message.. There’s no way to cancel my appointment. I read reviews about John Capener has bad bedside manner and feel like I need to be in the care as someone that actually is concerned and will take the time with me to explain things since I had s positive test results from the previous procedure. I find it funny that they want 72 hour notice yet they don’t make it available for you to cancel in that timeframe. I never received instructions and I sent instructions through the portal Messaging service where every single line there is only a single letter format and I cannot make heads or tails of it-Wow people!!

Didn’t seem to really care or try and figure out what was causing me issues. Told me the obvious about what I already knew and then 9 months after paying for my visit I get billing for additional costs for a test I said not to run unless my insurance covered it. Apparently the company they ran the test through didn’t take my insurance months later and now I get a bill. Even though I was reassured that wouldn’t be the case.
