Terrible. You will be treated like a medical record to be processed, not like a human. Like others, I waited ~1 year to get my initial endoscopy appt. No follow-up to explain the findings so I uploaded the after visit summary to ChatGPT - that was more empathetic and helpful than any of the staff at UCSD GI have been. Was referred for a follow-up motility study (a most unpleasant experience, but not the source of my negative review). No follow-up from UCSD for two months after so I reached out to see what we found. Their PA's recommendation: take heartburn medication. Thanks - didn't need $5,000 of procedures over the course of two years for that - I need to know if I can get back to swallowing normally again. The day when we replace human doctors with robots cannot come soon enough.

Clinical staff is lovely, everything else is beyond unprofessional. From submitting prior authorization for incorrect prescriptions, to taking multiple business days to read a single fax, trying to get my medication has been like pulling teeth. Have been trying to get a medication approved by my insurance for almost a month. Both insurance and pharmacy have been waiting for Dr.'s office to send information. When I called multiple times to verify my Dr.'s office sent the necessary info, I was told Dr.'s office never received anything. Was told that it takes a few days to get through their faxes. As I type this I am on the phone with a representative, who, after admitting she's confused with my situation, decided to stop answering my questions. No "let me place you on a brief hold." I am still on the line, but it's dead silent. Extremely unprofessional behavior.

My interaction with my first Nurse Practitioner was fine, which is why I'm awarding two stars. It's what came next that was horrible. I NEED a follow-up procedure and it has been ordered/referred by the NP, but nobody's particularly interested in helping me schedule it after 3 months of trying, despite being on the "wait list", etc. Call UCSD Gastroenterology if you want enjoyable interactions like: Scheduler: "Good news, we have an appointment available next month!" Me: "Awesome, I'll take it!" Scheduler: "Oh shoot, it looks like somebody else got it just now." Sure, that happened in the 1.5 seconds that it took me to say I wanted it. Long story short, this procedure, which is urgent, is now being offered to me in April '24 - 5 months from now. By then it will be exactly 1 year since I first reported the issues I was having to my GP. I don't think that's going to help me if I have a serious problem developing. Just go somewhere else.

If you love waiting 8 months for an appointment only to have it cancelled a few weeks before the appointment date, this is THE place to go! Expected more from UCSD but am deeply disappointed. But hey, according to the commercials they spend millions of dollars on every year, UCSD is World Class! (Gosh, if that's the case, I'd hate to see what the not-world-class option looks like....) Apparently there are simply no gastroenterologists anywhere in the state of California who can keep their word and see patients.

I would give zero stars if I could. I had an endoscopy with a biopsy. They give me the result over MyChart telling me I have A disease called EOE, a highly inflamed upper Esophagus that makes if difficult to swallow and sometimes breather, and tell me I should see a specialist. First available appointment is 3 months. I have many other overlapping medical issues that this condition makes worse. They refuse to even have a video visit to explain the disease or return the repeated messages from my primary care team to start the treatment as soon as possible. They should loose their medical license for failing to take care of patients that need help. I do not understand how they sleep at night for being so heartless and uncaring.

Below is an outline of my appointments and procedure at UCSD Gastroenterology – the worst medical experience I've ever had. 6 months waiting time for an initial video appointment with Dr. Joshua Rubin; canceled by him days before the scheduled appointment; waited another 4 months for the re-scheduled video appointment; waited 3 more months for the upper GI endoscopy performed by Joshua Rubin. Basically I waited for more than a year to see this doctor in person at the procedure room. Right after the procedure I had swallowing difficulty and other complications. I called the office and was told to wait at least 3 months to do a followup video appointment with him. He denied the complications had anything to do with his performance during the procedure, didn't address my concerns(constantly saying "I don't know") and referred me back to my primary care physician. It turned out that the endoscopy, which led to nothing but prolonged complications, was completely unnecessary. I have only three words to summarize Dr. Joshua Rubin and UCSD Gastroenterology in general: Incompetent, careless, and irresponsible.

A nurse got me on the phone for 13 minutes, then charged me $400+ for a ">30 minute meeting". I ended up never going to my appointment because the phone call really demotivated me because it felt like they weren't really listening, and now I have a $400+ bill for 13 minutes of scheduling an appointment with no real explanation. Ridiculous I looked at the bill/documentation online and it said "New patient office or other outpatient visit with low level of medical decision making, if using time, 30 minutes or more" for $400+ So I disputed it with their billing people that the documented billing reason seems wrong, and after a week the billing person called back and basically said the office said it's the "correct billing code" and when I asked for a reason, they said "the documentation is correct" and that I "can see what it said online".... Which is what I was looking at to dispute this in the first place.... ?????????????????? If they gave me some sort of real reason that made sense, I would kind of understand.... what is this complete total bs????????? Prior to this, it took UHC about 4 months to get a referral, and then another 1-2 months to get a phone appointment from the place.
