I am writing this review to warn other families and urge extreme caution when considering Mr. Edward Mena for hepatology care. Because of what we feel was a severe negligence of care, my grandfather has recently passed away. During my grandfather’s time under Mena’s care, we experienced a consistent failure to follow up on critical lab results, a dismissal of worsening symptoms, and a severe lack of communication regarding his treatment plan. Despite our family raising concerns such as his fluid retention, confusion, and changing blood work, these warning signs were minimized and ignored. A specialist in hepatology is supposed to manage complex liver conditions with proactive, sharp, and attentive care. Instead, the management of my grandfather's condition felt entirely reactive and careless. By the time the severity of his condition was properly acknowledged, it was too late. Losing a loved one is devastating, but knowing that proper medical attention and attentiveness might have changed the outcome is a pain I do not want another family to experience. Please advocate strongly for your loved ones, and consider looking elsewhere for a hepatologist who treats their patients with the urgency and dignity they deserve.

Very hard to get appointments. We need clones Dr. Mena. Amazing doctor. Kind and thorough with issues. Was able to diagnose very rare disease right away. He just needs right staff to make him less busy with all the nonsense work he may have to do.

The nurse who examined me looked as if I owed her 109,700.

This doctors office staff is AWFUL. Rude and condescending - the fact that he knowingly allows behaviors like this is telling. Find a different doctor.

Terrible place. They have no idea how to work in the US system, and they couldn’t care less about the patients. Do yourself a favor and go to a different doctor.

They are always behind their schedule. I did not see the doctor until more than an hour after my scheduled appointment time, so not professional

you have to provide bloodwork/referral from your pcp. note that this needs to be faxed over from pcp. no other option.. i got my bloodwork faxed. set an appt (3-4 months in advance bc they are busy) got to my appt and waited 30 mins for another staff (not dr.mena) to tell me to come back with more bloodwork.. now i have to wait another 3 months to come back 🙃

UPDATE 10/25: The new office is much better coordinated. The same great doctors provide quality service with genuine care, and it’s a lot easier to get in contact. Iman is so wonderful! OLD REVIEW: The doctor is good, if you ever get to see him. Voicemail always full and nobody answers the phones. Lunchtimes vary and overlap into appointment times. I’ve never had a more frustrating time making and appointment or getting referrals for blood work.

I wish i could find a doctor that actually sees patients themselves, and actually cared. This was the worst experience I've ever had at a doctors office. It took over 4 months to get an appointment, and when I got there finally, they only had my blood work results from 5 months ago! In that time, while waiting for my appointment, I had my blood and urine tested 6 times, been admitted to the ER twice, once overnight in that time, and this office has no idea about any of that. The front desk kept losing my labs and charts, over and over again, even when it was sent to them three times, by three different sources! Strange how every other doctors office I go to received the new charts and files, just not this one... The AWFUL nurse that saw me, Catherine Hill, not the actual doctor, he was MIA. She was 70 minutes late to my appointment, didn't apologize, or even acknowledge being so late, then called my insurance "terrible" I explained to her that it was all I could, afford since I am disabled, again no apologie. She then did no exam, or even look at, concerns, she basically had no idea who I was or why I was there, had clearly only read my chart for 15 seconds outside the exam room. She then tried to hurry me out of my appointment, when I mentioned the level of my daily pain is a 9/10, and if there was anything that could be done to help with it. Her response was "What you want me to pump you full of a bunch of narcotics or something?" she then escorted me out doing absolutely nothing to help, or exam me, she just accused me of being a junky, seeking pain pills for fun, when all I am asking for is some relief from this crippling level of endless pain, but again she ignored my pleas for help, told me to just live with it, and insulted me for being low income and having bad insurance. When in fact it's my medi-cal insurance case manager that actually done so much more to help me than this place. Perhaps Ms Hill would be better off not working with people, particularly sick people, as she has clearly lost her empathy, professionalism, and caring that someone in the medical profession should have or at least pretend that you care.

A rare, highly skilled doctor who practices in Pasadena taking care of our medical needs. Great personality, vast knowledge of the most updated information. He truly is one of the kind doctors who could be practicing anywhere but chose to be with us in the tri city. The staff are equally nice and helpful.
